Selection process

As part of your contract with J.D. McKay Custom Homes, you will have the opportunity
to make the selections for your new home. This is a part of the building
process you are sure to enjoy. Along with your input in the plan design, the
selection process allows you to completely customize your dream home to suit
your individual tastes and needs
At J.D. McKay Custom Homes, we do everything we can to make the selection process a
hassle free experience for our homeowners. First, we provide you with a list
of all the selections that need to be made. In addition, the list includes
all of the necessary information about where, who and how to make each
selection. Finally, the list will specify the allowance dollars available
(if applicable) to use in making each selection. To the extent that
selections are made for less than the allowance amount, the difference is
always credited back to the homeowner. If the selections are made for more
than the allowance amount, the difference is either paid out-of-pocket from
the homeowner or added to the contract price. J.D. McKay Custom Homes requires that
all selections be finalized within 45 days after signing of purchase
contract
The items that need to be selected are fairly similar in each home that we
build. Generally, the selections must be made for the style and color of the
following:
- Exterior finishes
- Interior colors and stains
- Floor coverings
- Cabinetry
- Counter tops
- Vanity tops
- Lighting fixtures
- Plumbing fixtures
On your selection sheet we list preferred suppliers to contact in making
each of your selections. In addition, you will be given the individual’s
name that is our contact person at each supplier. We have invested a
substantial amount of time and effort in assembling our list of preferred
suppliers and we feel that they offer the best combination of quality,
price, and service. We encourage our customers to take advantage of each
supplier’s expertise in making the selections for their new home. With the
pool of resources that we have assembled, making your selections is bound to
be far more easy and enjoyable than you could ever have imagined!
Helpful Hints about making selections
- It may help to try to think of an existing home or magazine picture, which
best resembles the look that you are trying to create for your new home. A
picture (or address) is worth a thousand words when you go to talk with the
supplier.
- Sketch in the furniture arrangement on a copy of your floor plan.
Realizing “what will go where” is a big help in deciding the best selections
to make
- Also, remember some of the fundamentals about colors and decorating
- A color theme throughout the home usually works well.
- Different species of wood, dissimilar materials and differing
manufacturers’ products will take stains and paints differently. Never
assume an exact color match
- Opposites attract. Colors that are similar generally contrast. Solids and
patterns generally mix well.
Neutral colors such as white or off white are the safest selection because
they tend to go well with any décor or accessory.
- When traveling to showrooms call in advance to set up an appointment with
our contact person. Visit the showrooms that are close together on the same
days to avoid separate trips. Take samples of any particular fabric you may
want to match up.
- Have a good idea what you want prior to arriving. Entering a showroom with
little idea of what you want can make for a very long frustrating selection
process.
- Know and understand what the adjacent or coordinating colors will be to
the selection you are about to make.
- Get samples or colors of all the selections you make and bring them with
you when you go to make subsequent selections.
- Make certain your selection is documented correctly. Do not rely on
numbers alone. Have the coordinator provide a written description of your
selection including color, manufacturer, and style, or pattern.
- Always obtain two copies of your selection from each supplier, keep one
for your records and provide your J.D. McKay Custom Homes representative with the
other
